The Black- tailed Prairie Dog
17/09/04
Introduction:
The Black-tailed Prairie Dog’s scientific name is Cynomys Iudovicianus. There taxonomic group is mammals (terrestrial). In Canada they are now only found in Saskatchewan. It is a Special Concern and became this during the month of November 2000.
Description:
The Black-tailed Prairie Dog is a large cousin to the squirrel family. They are burrow-dwellers. They are mostly a yellowish colour with reddish-brown on top and a whitish colour for the lower part. They have a very distinctive black tip on their long tail. They have fairly large eyes.
Black-tailed Prairie Dog’s are about fifth teen inches tall, and they weight from
thirty two to forty eight ounces. Their distinctive feature is its territorial “jump-yip”. To do this they stretch their body vertically and throw their forefeet high into the air and make a bark like call. They are most active during the cooler hours of the day. This makes them diurnal animals.
A Little History:
The Black-tailed Prairie Dog’s live in what is like a town. They are under ground tunnels that lead to very us places. The towns are subdivided into wards, which are similar to counties or regions. The wards are even farther divided into coteries. These are distinct social units. They consist of a single adult male, one – four adult females and any off spring under the age of two years. Movement between wards is very uncommon but, in families they “kiss”. They “kiss” by walking up to one another with bared teeth and they “kiss”. This is a form of recognition.
The females produce only one litter in March or April. Their babies are called pups. There could be three to five pups per litter. The pups are born both hairless and blind. It takes a gestation period of thirty four to thirty five days. The pups do not come out of the protection of the burrow until they are about six weeks.
Habitat and Distribution of Population:
The Black-tailed Prairie Dogs mostly inhabit broad, flat river valleys and upland grasslands. They like arid grasslands meaning both short and mixed grass prairies. In Canada they now only found in the very southern portion of Saskatchewan along the Frenchman River. In 1995/1996 there were twenty two known colonies in Saskatchewan.
